Serenity is a state of mental calm and clarity, where you feel at peace in the present moment, able to focus on what matters. Unlike many prayers that ask for peace or happiness, the Serenity Prayer does. The famous prayer asks for God’s help achieving something that most people desire but few can achieve: peace and happiness in life. Serenity comes from the root, serene, meaning calm, tranquil, peaceful, and clear/ unclouded. The Serenity Prayer is one of the best known prayers in Christianity and perhaps the best known Christian prayer among non-Christians. When we pray the line “courage to change the things I can” we may think of how Joshua in the Old Testament was commanded to be strong and courageous, because God was with him. Serenity is the first virtue mentioned in the Serenity Prayer and is presented as the primary goal.
